Since one is not directly present at the scene of that time, diverse viewpoints are inevitable; ultimately, we must choose the most appropriate perspective based on historical verification and logic, rather than on authority.

I was born with nothing and lived a sorrowful life, having suffered too much injustice; and due to my tender heart, I could not take my eyes off history's losers like myself. I endured life by channeling the flames of anger against disguised victors into my energy. That anger has not faded even now, now that I am over eighty. I wanted to become an iconoclast. I was prepared from the start that the path would be arduous. The essence of my historical scholarship was "compassion for the losers resulting from unjust judgments." The teaching of Professor Kang Il-soon—that "driving a nail into one person's heart blocks the energy of heaven and earth"—or rather, the concept of "Haewon" (resolving grievances), was the symbol of my historical scholarship. Since my youth, I have harbored a desire to write for the general public about stories I could not bring myself to speak from the podium, historical facts that might appear somewhat trite for academic papers, and topics that our historical academic community regarded as heresy. Now that I have left the academic podium and am relatively free, I felt it was time to meet a new readership by supplementing the original edition, *Revisiting Korean History*, which was published over twenty years ago and has been consistently read ever since. Thus, writing this fourth edition with a sense of great relief, I have written about exactly what and how academic history, government-commissioned history, and clan and religious history have taught incorrectly; this book is the result. While there are certainly parts of this book worthy of praise, I am well aware that it will likely face tremendous resistance. I ask readers to first take a close look at the table of contents. Considering the new facts and photographic materials, this edition amounts to having rewritten 50% of the original.
