Seol Jin-ah: Honest press

In an absurd world where falsehoods masquerade as truth and mislead the public, the role of journalists who summon the courage to uncover the truth and stand on the side of the weak is more important than ever. With the development of digital technology opening avenues for the general public to contribute to news production and distribution, the press has become more democratic and possessed explosive power. However, paradoxically, there is widespread opinion that the reality facing the press in the 21st century is far darker and more pessimistic than in the 19th or 20th centuries. This is because, in the era of digital media convergence, the types and number of media outlets have increased significantly, the press has been driven into a situation of infinite competition, and the waves of commercialization have intensified. Perhaps countless journalists are merely living as professionals. Nevertheless, efforts to contemplate the essence of the press, constantly reaffirm the mission of journalists, and ensure their continued existence must not cease. At historically significant junctures, many journalists summoned the courage to overcome the oppression and violence of power and social injustices, and as a result, the world was able to become a better place. You will be able to confirm through the various examples introduced in this book that honest journalists were working within the ‘media that changed the world,’ and that their role shines like an unchanging touchstone even as times change.
