Seo Deok-hee: Meet Homeschooling
Are we allowing our children to experience "ease" rather than "anxiety"? Are we not allowing their present to be consumed by "anxiety" by forcing them to prepare for future career paths that have not yet arrived and for a dystopian future society? Consequently, are we causing children to acquire a defense mechanism of choosing "disconnection" over "nomadism"—the pursuit of encountering the wider world—in order to protect themselves from that anxiety, and to be satisfied with their present selves here and now? Are we not causing them to choose "isolation" to avoid differences rather than confronting others to "transcend" themselves? Are we not causing them to be satisfied with a passive life, buried in the safety given to them, rather than enjoying an active life of changing both the world and themselves? The questions raised in this book are all the more serious because the dilemmas of life and education encountered through homeschooling are not merely "their" problems, but also "our" problems as we send our children to school. At first glance, the recent trend in school innovation appears to emphasize autonomy and integration, allowing students to experience leisure, nomadism, transcendence, and agency; however, in reality, it is difficult to confidently assert this. This is because, while autonomy and integration are emphasized for the child, there are instances where parents and adults are unaware of or misunderstand their responsibilities as "adults." Children's "autonomy" is not formed in a vacuum. The "integration" of children's lives and education has no direction in itself. If so, what is the role of adults?
