“Another Dunhuang”: Examining Dunhuang’s Funeral Culture Through ‘Tomb-Bowls’ and ‘Illustrated Tiles’. Since ‘tomb-bowls’ and ‘illused tiles’ were produced for specific individuals buried in tombs, unlike wooden tablets or Dunhuang literature, there is not much that can be clearly understood through analysis; however, they allow us to infer the views on life and death held by the people who lived in Dunhuang at that time. The fact that illustrated tiles are overwhelmingly numerous and depict various mythical creatures suggests that Dunhuang’s funeral culture is a unique and dense tradition with no similar examples found elsewhere. Furthermore, the peculiar uniformity of the excavation—where only tomb-bowls and illustrated tiles were found among the grave goods—serves as a crucial clue for examining the reality of the local society of Dunhuang and allows us to infer its funeral culture.
