It's not a very famous book, but it has translations and it's just amazing. It's a book that helps us understand human Beethoven and his music more realistically.
Many questions seem to be resolved about Beethoven's ability to write a great song without listening to it.
Robin Wallace: Music that has lost its sound
It is a book that escapes the decrepit images and heroic myths of malignant, bizarre genius, to expose the creative and performance of deaf Beethoven in a new light, and to reveal where Beethoven's greatness originated. Robin Wallace, a musician who has spent his life studying Beethoven's music, looks at her wife Barbara's hearing loss for over ten years and finds insight and motivation to explore the last years of Beethoven' life in similar hearing problems. The author also studies and experiences Beethoven’s vast sketch, his notes, his books, his penthouse notes, and many of his pianos, his 'hearing machines' and his music tools. The book describes a story about how deaf Beethoven wrote by combining music research and brain science and experience, and why he did not stop creating. Further, he comes to late-aged Beethoven and his music, which he has apparently ‘ overcome ’ with the problem, asking the fundamental question whether it is a product of overcoming it.
