It helps you think about what fascism is, and what to do, amid the rise of the far right around the world.
Wherever state authorities turned a blind eye to direct acts of hostility against communists or socialists, space opened up for fascism to take hold. In that sense, fascism’s greatest enemy was the strict enforcement of the law by the courts and administrative authorities.
I knew little about fascism, but while reading this book I learned what gave rise to the ideology and how it changed over time. It helped me understand fascism clearly and define exactly what it means to me.
I wanted to avoid the difficulty of trying to explain things by casually calling them one “-ism” or another.
The writing is easy to read. The book is thick, but surprisingly light and easy to carry. The cover has a pleasantly textured feel, and I like the smell of the pages, too.
Fascism does not have a very long history, but seeing it still rampant today makes me think of it as a virus. The book gives examples of fascist movements and explains what fascism is.
I read this to learn more about fascism, but I still don’t think it is easy to define. Even so, I could see that many things happening in our country today could be considered fascist.
I was able to learn about fascism’s beginnings, its rise and decline, and even its possibilities in modern society.
Robert O. Paxton: fascism
Alongside communism, fascism—the defining political subject of the twentieth century—remains at the center of academic and political debate today, well into the twenty-first century. Concerns about neo-fascist parties rapidly gaining strength in Europe, and about the possibility of imperialist America becoming fascist as Christian fundamentalists rally and drive the world into a vortex of war, have moved beyond speculation to become urgent realities. In Korea, too, fascism is a central subject of intense debate, from arguments over “everyday fascism” to the controversy over “mass dictatorship” surrounding the Park Chung-hee regime; it has also become a familiar topic appearing repeatedly in the media. But does the word “fascism,” as it is used in everyday conversation, mean anything beyond an insult hurled at opponents? Is there an agreed-upon, precise academic and historical definition of fascism? The Anatomy of Fascism is the culmination of forty years of research by Robert Paxton, the leading authority on fascism. It is both an accessible scholarly work that illuminates this most controversial issue of the twentieth century as a vivid concern of our own time and a definitive work that could put to rest more than sixty years of debate about fascism. This book is both a history and a social-scientific analysis of fascism. It traces fascism chronologically, clearly examining, criticizing, and synthesizing the interactions between the social and economic conditions of each period and its political actors. Rather than approaching fascism as an ideology, the author thoroughly examines the historical record of the core movements and regimes commonly recognized as fascist, chiefly those of Italy and Germany, and from that evidence clearly draws out what fascism is.
