Robert Musil: Man with no traits 5
Robert Musil's (1880–1942) posthumous and representative work, *Man Without Qualities*, is a masterpiece regarded as the essence of 20th-century literature alongside *Ulysses* and *In Search of Lost Time*, despite being unfinished. Musil keenly analyzed the zeitgeist of the fragmented society in which people lived prior to the outbreak of World War I. Individuals facing an existential crisis in an era where everything is explained by technology and statistics are depicted as people who have lost their identity in a nation divided into various ethnic groups. Ulrich, the "man without qualities" who does not identify himself with externally imposed traits, rejects a world that is already complete and given to him, constantly seeking possibilities for a life different from the existing one in order to live "his own life." This critical perspective is also reflected in the work's form. Musil boldly departed from traditional narrative forms and attempted an essayistic format, arguing that there is nothing to talk about in an era where emotions and experiences have lost their place; his challenge left a significant mark on literary history.
