This is the first book in the “Read at a Cafe” series, ambitiously released by Himchan Books. With “What is the difference between a leader and a follower?” as its theme, it introduces timeless teachings drawn from Eastern classics in three sections: the qualities and foundations of a leader; a leader's attitude toward the world; and self-development through practice and reflection.

This book explains the qualities of a leader through Eastern philosophy. We often think of a leader as someone who guides and leads the group they belong to. The author divides the qualities, foundations, and attitudes leaders need into filial piety, ethics, effort, growth, and self-development through discipline and reflection. [Image caption.] The section on filial piety in the first chapter especially impressed me. What does filial piety have to do with leadership? The book says it is the

When people hear “philosophy,” and especially “Eastern philosophy,” does anyone think, “Oh, that sounds fun,” “How fascinating,” or “I can't wait to read it”? Probably not a single person. That's how distant Eastern philosophy feels to us—like some kind of homework. Many people know Western philosophers such as Plato, Nietzsche, Kant, Hegel, Wittgenstein, and Spinoza. When they hear Confucius, Mencius, or Zhuangzi, they may not think of anyone else from Eastern philosophy. How did it get this

A ten-minute-a-day humanities read to strengthen your mind! Read the essence of Eastern philosophy: The Analects, Mencius, Great Learning, Doctrine of the Mean, Book of Songs, Book of Documents, Book of Changes, Records of the Grand Historian, and Caigentan… These days I have been focusing on books about the humanities and classics. When I first encountered the humanities, many parts felt difficult because the field was new to me, but little by little I am starting to enjoy it. Time to look

In Eastern philosophy, filial piety is an important foundational virtue. Parents are the root of all life, so filial piety is the first step in self-cultivation: disciplining and setting the body and mind straight. It is the key among keys that determines a leader's mental qualities. This book, *Eastern Philosophy Met at a Cafe*, introduces Eastern philosophy. One four-character idiom for filial piety is *banpo boeun*: repaying a kindness by feeding someone in return. It describes a child

*Eastern Philosophy Met at a Cafe* Eastern philosophy places great emphasis on leaders and filial piety. It is a philosophy based on Chinese texts written with Chinese characters and shaped by China's influence; here in Korea, works such as *The Analects*, associated with Confucius and Mencius, have also passed down many teachings. This book uses passages to teach proper conduct, how to treat others, devotion to one's parents, and love of country. It especially emphasizes filial piety. Perhaps

Most books follow a set format: an introduction, table of contents, main text, and conclusion. Many books are published that way. This one feels more direct, perhaps: it skips that format and gets straight to the substance. The table of contents appears on the title page, which leaves you wondering why it was arranged that way and whether it was intentional. When I think of books to read leisurely in a cafe with delicate tea or fragrant coffee, I usually think of novels or poetry. Philosophy

*The Analects, Mencius, Great Learning, Doctrine of the Mean, Book of Songs, Book of Documents, Book of Changes, Records of the Grand Historian,* and *Caigentan*—*Eastern Philosophy Met at a Cafe*, which contains the essence of Eastern philosophy, gathers key ideas from the classics to make them easier to understand. The classics can be extensive and difficult for ordinary readers, so I often choose books arranged to make them accessible. I enjoy learning the wisdom of life from the teachings

This book offers guidance on Eastern philosophy and thought, which has much in common with our sensibilities and culture and can be seen as central to the classics and philosophy. It explains what they mean, how to learn about Eastern philosophy and thought that can feel difficult, and how to put them to use in real life. It should be a helpful guide for anyone interested in humanities or in exploring Eastern philosophy in depth. *Eastern Philosophy Met at a Cafe* may seem difficult because of

When your mind feels stifled and unsettled, consider Eastern philosophy, represented by Chinese philosophy, and discover what makes it truly appealing. When the world feels complicated and chaotic, people always look for something: the humanities. It is like always seeking out water. Yet there is one field that people find especially difficult and demanding, but believe every human being should study: philosophy. I think it is the most important field for understanding people. Whenever I

I should take Eastern Philosophy at a Cafe to a cafe someday. It would be even better to bring Western Thought at a Cafe along too. Eastern philosophy feels a little different from Western thought. They are more or less alike in being fields that ponder and reflect on the essence of human nature, but Eastern philosophy somehow feels more human. I do not know why. Western thought seems to involve a lot of thinking while spending time alone, whereas Eastern philosophy seems to deal especially
