Description

Students in South Korea currently learn history using government-approved textbooks. These are textbooks written by scholars and teachers and published by a particular publisher, then reviewed by the government and either approved or rejected. Because they must follow government writing standards to pass, they cannot go beyond that framework. The History Textbook of the Republic of Korea is a history textbook published under a free-publication system, without state censorship. Under this system, scholars and teachers can write textbooks freely, drawing on academic diversity without a censorship process. Most OECD countries currently use this system. Free-publication textbooks are preferable to government-approved ones because they help students develop a wider range of perspectives. The content of a history textbook matters more than its system. The History Textbook of the Republic of Korea is written from a perspective of national self-determination within Korea and peace and coexistence in its view of the outside world. Its structure presents the development of national history evenly from the Paleolithic era to the present, giving each period a similar amount of coverage to maintain a consistent perspective. One characteristic is that every period is presented as closely connected to us today.

Given the current political climate, this book makes me look back at our history. I was struck by its assessment of the 1623 coup that brought King Injo to power. The author argues that a long chain of events continued through the Westerners (later the Noron faction) and led to the 1910 annexation of Korea, driven by ruling Noron figures such as Lee Wan-yong—and that this chain connects to the current December 3 insurrection and the People Power Party. I strongly agree. It has renewed my

I hope The History Textbook of the Republic of Korea for Everyone will be translated into Chinese and distributed throughout China to counter China’s Northeast Project, and also translated into English and sent around the world to introduce the brilliant, original story of our history.

It took me some time to read because there was so much more about the independence army than I remember from school. The books on the independence army published by our ancestors, along with people’s testimonies, come together to form a sweeping story of the independence movement. I liked it. This volume has more stories and voices from ordinary people, which I appreciated. I’m starting it a second time and will read it many more times.

Modern Korean history has long been a barren field. The era of developmental dictatorship and rapid growth lifted us out of the universal, absolute poverty passed down through a long tradition, but structural poverty caused by polarization and concentrated wealth—and an unaddressed past—remain tragedies of modern history. Every Korean should read this book. I hope the day comes when the Korean flag is no longer a symbol of the far right.

I enjoyed revisiting early modern and modern history. The explanations of the period of resistance against Japan and the division of Korea were detailed. It was excellent to see a more positive view of Joseon Korea.

Just as a tree escaping the earth’s constraints is not freedom but death, true freedom must grow alongside historical consciousness. A genuine history textbook for our people since liberation.

I’m enjoying The History Textbook of the Republic of Korea. I read it through once quickly out of curiosity, and now I’m studying it again, reading some sections more carefully. I especially feel that earlier history textbooks devoted far too little space to Gojoseon. The section on the late Goryeo and early Joseon periods is interesting, too. I’m cheering for this book!
