Description

A complete translation of the original Latin text by Descartes scholar Professor Lee Hyun-bok Includes detailed annotations clarifying the original text and three commentaries Includes various illustrations offering a glimpse into the era Descartes, the father of modern Western philosophy, sought absolute truth while confronting the bleak spirit of the times characterized by skepticism and relativism. In *Meditations on First Philosophy*, he began with "methodical doubt," considering anything even remotely doubtful as false; he eventually became convinced that "I think, therefore I exist" was an undeniable truth and established it as the first principle of philosophy. From this, he proved that God exists and that the mind is substantially distinct from the body, laying the foundations for new natural philosophy. This book compiles *Meditations on First Philosophy*, which fully contains Descartes' metaphysical thought; *Inquiry into Truth by the Light of Nature*, in which Cartesian doubt is more clearly expounded; *Notes on the Program*, which helps in understanding these works; and *Grounds for Demonstrating the Presence of God and the Distinction between Soul and Body According to Geometric Arrangements*, in which Descartes responds to the refutation of *Meditations on First Philosophy*, thereby enabling a comprehensive overview of Cartesian metaphysics.

If Descartes' Discourse on Method is the introduction, this book is the first book where you can taste the essence of Descartes' thought. Descartes' sentences are complex to read, but they are fun to dissect.

Descartes' Cogito is truly like a treasure to me. However, the circular reasoning and dualism that arise at the end are merely regrettable.

This book is a re-released translation since the first edition, and accordingly, it follows the expressions of the original text more clearly. Furthermore, it is easy to understand as it is accompanied by other texts related to reflection.

The printing on pages 65–80 is poor, so I need to exchange this. Please be sure to check these pages before purchasing.

"For the translator, this translation was even more overwhelming than the first edition. In the first edition, I could translate words that did not seem to pose a significant semantic issue more lightly, and break down long sentences for readability; however, I could not do so this time. I had to agonize over not only conjunctions but also every single adverb expressing feeling, every comma, and every passive sentence. Because of this, I could not completely avoid awkward sentences that

This is the revised edition I have been waiting for! It is smooth for a thorough reading of the difficult Descartes. It is helpful that explanations are provided in the original language at the beginning of each chapter. The bold text and illustrations make it easy on the eyes. —KH Oh
