The story of India's blazing poet Tagore
R. Tagore: Gitanjali
In 1913, Tagore became the first Asian to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. This fact drew the attention of the Indian people living in that land, which had been fading from the world's interest, with great surprise and admiration. The *Gitanjali* introduced here is his award-winning work, compiled from the English editions he either wrote himself or translated into English. Although the English edition of *Gitanjali* consists of 103 prose lyric poems, it is not a complete translation of the original Bengali text of the same name; rather, it is a selection of 53 poems from the original text, along with 50 poems from *The Wreath of Song* and *The Offering*, which the poet was free to adapt into English while preserving the ideas and visions of the original poems. The author's own translation is, in essence, a magnificent English poem rather than a mere translation. In *Gitanjali*, one can see the melodies of peaceful joy of a pure mind, which only humans who have transcended the sorrow of life and the fear of death can possess, rippling throughout. *Gitanjali* means "offering through song," but the Indian philosopher Radhakrishnan described it as, "It is the offering of the soul's song from the finite to the infinite."
