Park Kyung-nam: Cheokdok, a single sheet of paper filled with heart
Cheokdok was a new form of writing in Joseon society. *Cheokdok: A Sheet of Paper Filled with the Heart* is a book compiling 21 selected pieces of *cheokdok*, a genre of short letters from the Joseon Dynasty. Cheokdok remained faithful to the purpose of conveying trivial stories of daily life to those with whom one shared a close relationship. While the content may be somewhat lengthy or serious depending on the relationship between the sender and receiver or the sender's circumstances, it is generally characterized by its brevity; it captures the unadulterated reality of life and honest feelings, clearly revealing the writer's individuality. Therefore, more than any other literary genre, cheokdok reveals the inner self of the Joseon scholar who never lost his elegance and composure. In today's world, where a culture of freely communicating and sharing emotions through short writings has taken root, cheokdok can be reborn as a model of writing.
