Description

COVID-19 created a need for remote learning, while a similar need arose to develop people with creative mathematical and information skills. Many math teachers learned mathematical construction and coding tools. But applications commonly used in schools could not freely solve the nonlinear differential equations I had studied in college to describe physical and social phenomena. I wondered whether Mathematica could meet my needs and decided to try it. I first heard of Mathematica in college over 20 years ago; it has only been a little over a year since I started using version 13.1, bought a book, and studied the code. At first I worked through the thick manual compiled by Jang Hoon Lee, entering code on my PC and learning slowly, step by step. I was grateful for help from Ji-won Hwang, a department head at Dahan Tech. Seeing the impressive work in the Wolfram Demonstrations Project initially discouraged me as I compared it with my own limited skills. But by carefully analyzing the code examples and explanations in Lee’s book, I learned gradually and eventually wrote several simple programs. Mathematica’s syntax is indeed difficult compared with applications commonly used in Korean middle and high schools.

I’m a researcher studying optimization and mainly use Mathematica. After buying Volume 1, I bought Volume 2 as well. This book is especially helpful for solving differential equations by following its examples. It’s good for studying on your own.

A useful book covering both physics and Mathematica. It’s great for solving differential equations that won’t solve analytically, using numerical methods!
