Park Jong-ho: Berlin

There are often more than one cultural place in Berlin. Three main opera houses, two large libraries and two large parks to represent the city. In the museum dense areas, where there is a remarkable concentration of other cities, there are two places in Berlin. The reason Berlin became so double-rich was, ironically, the division of Germany. As cities split into two, existing cultural institutions became part of East Berlin or West Berlin, and the two divided cities were taken away by the opposing blocs. To fill in the facilities, we expanded the new culture infrastructure. Then, as a result of the unity, the main cultural institutions that existed in East Berlin came together again in one Berlin. So in Berlin, a great cultural institution doubled its share of wealth. Thus, the painful history of division by World War II and the Cold War has become a basis for making Berlin more prosperous today. Many monuments are also showing that they are not to forget the twentieth century of the Great War. The world's most ancient Jewish museum, the old bombed-out building, a modern church built next to it, a former decapitated store with only one statue and a street art gallery on the wall of Berlin, and many places where the tragic history has been promoted in an artistic way. So Berlin became a city that could walk in more silence.
