Description

We experience many emotions as we go through life. Some are positive, like happiness and joy, and others are negative, like anxiety and worry. Positive emotions are not good simply because they are positive, and negative emotions are not bad simply because they are negative. They are just among the many emotions we feel, and both kinds are essential to living. Positive emotions give us strength to live better, while negative emotions help us survive in the world. For example, fear helps us avoid danger, and worry helps us act a little more safely. Positive emotions usually are not a problem; we can simply feel them. But sometimes negative feelings roll in, like clouds gathering in the heart. Psychological research says that when a negative emotion arises, simply identifying exactly what it is can calm us right away. We recognize our feelings when we put them into words. Building emotional vocabulary matters because it helps us give our feelings the right names. When we name an emotion and think carefully about why we feel it and what we can do, we can view it more objectively and move through it more easily. Practicing a richer vocabulary for emotions—especially negative ones—and learning to recognize them in detail can help children, and eventually adults, grow emotionally resilient.

I had found it hard to explain feelings to children, so I liked how this book introduces emotions through situations and makes them easy to understand. It seems like a good way to talk with children about emotions and when they have felt them; we
