Park Jae-yong: Science Performance Assessment
The structural components that form the backbone of science education and subject-specific pedagogy in Korea have, from the outset, utilized theories, models, and concepts of science education researched and established abroad. Therefore, the meanings and characteristics of science education and its components—which have become subjects of controversy due to differing interpretations—should have been agreed upon based on these original theories, models, and concepts before being described in textbooks for universities of education and colleges of teacher training. Recognizing this issue and sharing a common goal to resolve it, several professors decided to publish materials that translate or interpret these theories, models, concepts, and the associated science teaching and learning methods exactly as they appear in original research or primary references. In cases where there are multiple primary references, they decided to organize them sequentially from the earliest published to the most recent, generalizing them inductively. However, it was not feasible for one or two individuals to verify and describe the original texts regarding the theories, models, and concepts of science education and subject-specific pedagogy. Furthermore, even if several professors were to translate and interpret the original texts, and then edit or write the results, publishing them in print would be even more difficult due to financial constraints. Given these circumstances, the Korea Science Education Content Cooperative decided to undertake this project. The Cooperative plans to continuously publish thematic monographs by commissioning writing from professors specializing in specific sub-topics within science education and subject-specific pedagogy.
