Description

Every artwork is presented in an exhibition. When the exhibition ends, the work remains in the museum and the artist in art history. But where does the exhibition itself go? Museums are crowded on holidays with people visiting popular shows. Exhibitions on cultural heritage, classical paintings, contemporary art, and crafts take place across the country, and news that famous foreign museum collections are coming to Korea draws attention. An exhibition hall has become an entertainment space for new experiences and vicarious participation, beyond simply looking at art. An exhibition brings works, artists, audiences, and critics together; it is an important event where new art is born and introduced to the public. How did exhibitions begin? Modern Paris tells the stories behind twelve exhibitions held in Paris, the capital of avant-garde art. The Independents exhibition removed juries and gave a wider range of works a chance to be shown; the White Exhibition turned posters into art objects worth collecting; the Salon Dada combined performance and exhibition; and the International Surrealist Exhibition offered an immersive experience. These and other experiments gradually expanded the horizons of art. They challenged tradition and authority and ventured toward new art. Sometimes overlooked and sometimes condemned, they eventually entered history and shaped the art we see today. The history of exhibitions is the history of art. Through it, readers can see the currents and changes of modern art more vividly.

Modern Paris analyzes exhibitions held in Paris from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century, along with the organizers’ ideas and the relationships among attendees. In modern society, lack of understanding becomes controversial and only candles count as innovation. Yet the art history presented in this book shows how exhibitions sparked

I wish I could link to each exhibition in this collection that broadens your perspective. Modern Paris was sent to me by Hyunamsa. The book introduces many exhibitions, but I especially hope you look up the 1938 International Surrealist Exhibition. Seeing its photographs feels like looking at today’s modern art galleries in black and white. As the book says, “Breton wanted to restore a revolutionary character to the Surrealist movement through the exhibition.” It must have been a show where

This book helped me realize that an exhibition is not simply a display of artworks, but a layered experience involving complex interactions among artists, audiences, and critics. The history of exhibitions is the history of art, holding the social and cultural changes of each era as well as moments of challenge and innovation for artists. Seeing how movements such as Impressionism and Fauvism took shape made me feel that art develops through constant experimentation and challenge. Just as
