Description

Many hazardous factors capable of impairing health exist in places where people work or live. Depending on their characteristics, these hazardous factors can be classified into physical (noise, radiation, high heat, etc.), chemical (dust, various chemicals, etc.), biological (bacteria, mold, viruses, etc.), ergonomic (work factors that can cause musculoskeletal disorders, etc.), and socio-psychological factors (stress, etc.). Industrial hygiene refers to the scientific and technical activities aimed at preventing the inherent harmfulness (or toxicity) of these hazardous factors from manifesting in people. "Workplace environment measurement" is the activity of evaluating the quantity or intensity of hazardous factors to which workers are exposed. Such activities require a series of scientific knowledge and thinking skills to assess risks by measuring and analyzing hazardous factors. Because the processes of measurement, analysis, and evaluation for all hazardous factors are extensive, this textbook explains only the content regarding chemical factors. Compared to other factors, exposure to chemical factors is high, and accurate evaluation is difficult because the collection, measurement, and analysis processes are complex and challenging. Furthermore, considering the risks and exposure situations, it is a factor that must be managed with priority over other hazardous factors. The fundamental approach to managing and evaluating the risks of hazardous factors during processes such as preliminary investigation, measurement, analysis, and exposure assessment can be applied equally to other hazardous factors. In this revised textbook, the principles and application examples of direct-reading measuring instruments for monitoring airborne chemical substances have been reinforced (Chapters 4 and 6).
