Park Byeong-gi et al.: Traditions and New Trends in Moral Psychology

Moral psychology is a relatively recently established academic discipline that focuses on how morality develops, centering on the process of its formation within an individual. While moral psychology is a branch of psychology, it is also closely connected to ethics in that it must address the question of what morality actually is. Facing this reality, the members of the Korean Association for Moral and Ethical Education agreed to make the 2016 Annual Conference a venue for examining new trends in moral psychology from an independent perspective. By bringing together emerging researchers who are at the forefront of these trends and established researchers who have shown sustained interest in moral psychology, we sought to simultaneously pursue the proper transmission and transformation of moral education. At the same time, another central focus was on the Eastern tradition of moral psychology. While moral psychology in its modern sense emerged primarily after the 20th century, Mencius's idea that goodness is inherent in human nature, or the Buddhist perspective that all humans possess Buddha-nature, belong in themselves to the traditional sense of moral psychology. In particular, given that Eastern traditions strongly embody an educational context in which one can become a complete human being only when this premise is realized in life through self-cultivation or practice, it can be interpreted as a tradition that focuses on the deep connection between moral psychology and moral education.
