Description

Just as birds hatch from round eggs, plants begin as round seeds, take root in the soil, grow stems and leaves, bloom, and bear fruit. This book offers 92 amazing, fun, and useful stories about plants. Question 1: “Plants have no bones, so how do they grow straight upward?” Animal cells are surrounded by a thin membrane called a cell membrane, while plant cells are enclosed by a thick, sturdy, partition-like cell wall, with the cell membrane inside it. Question 2: “Why do plant roots grow downward?” Plant roots sense gravity and grow in that direction, a trait called positive gravitropism. So if you pull a seedling from the soil and lay it horizontally in a dark place, the root tip will bend and begin growing downward. Question 3: “Why does the morning glory have such a hard seed coat?” First, the hard coat helps it withstand heat and cold and protects it in dry conditions. Second, after an animal eats the seed, it needs to pass through the stomach and intestines undigested and be expelled with the animal’s waste. The Smart Plant Biology Textbook contains 92 amazing, fun, and useful stories that reveal the great natural principles and mysteries held by seemingly delicate plants born from tiny, round seeds. By the time you close the last page, people will be calling you “a botanist in everyday life.”

I think that simply reading this book carefully once could make an ordinary reader quite knowledgeable about botany, just as its cover promises: 'Read it once and anyone can become a botanist in everyday life!' It teaches facts about plants that we have not known, as well as answering questions we may never have thought to ask because things seemed obvious. People commonly wonder why beautiful flowers bloom and try to find the cause, yet may not even wonder why the stem supporting buds,

This book is full of really fun and fascinating stories about plants. It answers questions we may have wondered about, such as how plants grow straight without bones and how bananas became seedless. The question-and-answer format made it surprisingly easy and quick to read. I have not read much lately and felt my comprehension slipping, so starting with a book in this style may be a good way to build a reading habit. It also contains more challenging facts than expected, so I think my general

The old trees, cacti, succulents, and yellow rose on my balcony made it through the cold winter and are still doing well. I am grateful they have held on through several seasons. I covered them in plastic to keep them a little warmer. Recently I brought home new plants, but some turned yellow and even the ones that once grew like bullies have died. I wondered if the soil was the problem, but learned ventilation matters. The book says stroking plants makes them grow stout rather than leggy, and

A book's title can hint at its contents, and this one clearly says what it is about: Smart Plantology: A Curious Compendium, subtitled 'Read it once and anyone can become a botanist in everyday life!' But we can only learn exactly what that content is by reading it. The table of contents looks familiar, yet includes things I had never considered, which made me curious. The book offers scientific proof for things we take for granted, such as plants naturally growing toward the sun. How could

A Smart Compendium of Plant Biology — Osamu Tanaka *This book was provided by the publisher.* I was curious about the promise that anyone could become “a botanist in everyday life” after reading it once, because I am an enthusiastic plant parent, even if not a very skilled one. After reading this plant biology compendium, I boldly chopped back my compacta and watercolor rubber tree. Since I bought them, both plants had grown tall with a single trunk. The compacta in particular had a lovely,

Smart Plantology: A Curious Compendium is about how seeds grow and reproduce. Its 92 stories proceed from sprouting and growth through photosynthesis, buds, flowering and pollination, and seed formation and germination. It opens with questions such as how plants grow straight without bones, why roots grow downward, and why morning glory seeds have hard shells, then explains the answers engagingly. Each topic gets a chapter with simple photos or illustrations. I liked biology, so some stories

I picked this up because I have always been interested in plants. After reading many books about growing them, I found they repeated one another and offered little new, so I tried more specialized books. Most botany books, however, are difficult for general readers. Smart Plantology: A Curious Compendium makes potentially challenging botanical knowledge accessible and satisfies readers' curiosity. Plant lovers will enjoy it especially. It does not list plant species or growing instructions;

I grew up in the countryside and thought I would know a lot about plants, but I really do not, so I wanted to read this to learn more. The cover felt mysterious, like a spell book from Harry Potter, as if it were saying, 'Welcome, is this your first time with botany?' Although it is about botany, it is based on science, so I would recommend it to people who like science and biology too. It has five chapters and 92 questions and answers, each story no longer than two pages. That concise format
