Description

This book serves as a guide for all readers encountering Korean linguistics for the first time, including university students in the departments of Korean Language and Literature, Korean Language Education, and Korean Language Education. Accordingly, while maintaining a fundamental academic approach, the book was written with the grammar curriculum framework of the Korean language department and key points to emphasize in Korean language education in mind. It also serves as a more accessible and concise introductory text, ideal for reading before *General Introduction to Korean Grammar I & II*, co-authored by four authors. The book consists of a total of ten chapters. Chapter 1 covers the nature of language, the characteristics of the Korean language, and the perspectives and fields of research in Korean linguistics. Chapters 2 through 5 explain issues in phonology, morphology, and syntax—traditionally important topics in Korean linguistics—while also introducing key recent discussions. Chapters 6 and 7 address the discussions on semantics and discourse theory, which have been actively debated recently. The discourse section includes research tasks in pragmatics and text linguistics, and also aims to incorporate discussions on media, which are currently considered important in Korean language education. Chapter 8 describes the history of the Korean language as concisely as possible, while Chapter 9 deals with issues of writing systems and orthography, including character transcription and the creation of Hangeul. Chapter 10 covers dialectology and incorporates interest in social dialects, which have recently become a major topic in the field.

This is the introductory book I chose after much consideration to read through thoroughly and review my grammar again. I just wish the font size were a little bigger. Happy New Year and study hard!

I plan to read through the General Theory of Korean Grammar once before looking at it.
