Studying English can feel overwhelming. Sometimes you know every word, but still cannot understand the sentence. Even in Korean, long sentences sometimes take several readings to understand—so how much harder must English be? 😢 I try breaking sentences into clauses, grouping conjunctions, and approaching them in different ways, but when it still does not click, my head starts to hurt. I first became curious when I saw the words “Six Devils.” If something is hard for me, surely it is hard for

A guide to understanding English sentences even without knowing grammar. One of my favorite shows lately is Teachers! Math is a subject I like, so I can answer kids’ questions right away, still solve problems when I see them, and even manage some explanations and discussion, despite my limited explanations. So I tend to skip those parts. The segment I especially focus on and even take notes about is, of course, how to study English! One famous English instructor on the show told the students,

People say that to read English well at the high-school level, you first need to understand English sentence structures well. Six Devils, a book about the six “devils” that make English difficult, carefully explains how to interpret these phrases and clauses, helping readers learn to read sentence structures without difficulty. The book’s Six Devils are: (1) preposition + noun, (2) that + S + V, (3) to + base verb, (4) V-ing, (5) wh- + S + V (an interrogative clause), and (6) adverbial

English is among the languages that are very difficult for Koreans to learn. Even when you know the words, idioms made up of two or more words can have completely different meanings, so mastering the wide range of vocabulary and idioms is a struggle. English also has a very different word order, and phrases and clauses appear throughout sentences, making their structure complicated. This book clearly organizes the phrases and clauses that make English sentences long, complicated, and difficult

Many students have struggled with English since their school days—so much so that people call them “English dropouts”—and the same is true of adults. For students in particular, the college entrance exam is a major reason for studying, and given how long the exam’s English passages have become, fast, accurate reading and interpreting directly from English are increasingly important. If English interpretation is still difficult, the problem may be that you do not understand sentence structures

Why does English reading become harder as students advance in school, even when they know the vocabulary and expressions? English sentences grow more difficult by grade, and middle- and high-school students often say they know the words but cannot understand the sentences. The reason is that long complex sentences replace simple ones. Phrases and clauses make sentences long and complicated and confuse us. It is important to learn clear strategies for recognizing what confuses learners and how

The author says English is difficult not only because its word order differs from Korean, but also because phrases and clauses make sentences longer and more complex. This book collects the main culprits and calls them the SIX DEVILS. Part 1 covers the SIX little devils that make verbs difficult: tense, passive voice, modal verbs, the subjunctive, comparative constructions, and special constructions. Part 2 covers the SIX DEVILS that make English sentences long, complex, and difficult:

This is a fresh workbook for learning English sentence structures. Unlike existing workbooks that cover the entire range of grammar by category, this book focuses on the six things that make English difficult, as its title Six Devils suggests. Part 0 briefly introduces what the Six Devils are: 1. preposition + noun; 2. that + S + V; 3. to-v; 4. v-ing; 5. wh- + S + V; and 6. adverbial connector + S + V. These constructions are called the Six Devils because they can function as nouns, adjectives,

English is still one of the subjects many Koreans fear. This fear stems from English sentence structure and word order, which differ from Korean. The two languages have fundamentally different systems, so many learners struggle. I had the opportunity to learn about *Six Devils*, a book published to address this problem. It was designed to help learners overcome their fear by concisely organizing especially complicated phrases and clauses in English grammar. Why is English difficult? First, the
