Oh Jeong-hwa: Re-reading Austen and Dickens

Literature and religion are considered to be a separate, separate domain in modern scholarships, but both were essentially one body. It was after secularism that a distorted wall was built between them. Secularism has taken itself as neutral and objective and removed religion from the public sector. As these seculars also developed in the field of literary research, a huge wall was built between literature and religion. But as a result of the study's disregard for religion, secularism was criticized, and the reaction began with the realization that the most important aspect of human life was misunderstood or ignorant. The 19th century, as the most religious time in British history, is filled with Jane Austin and Charles Dickens, who represent the period. Secular criticism has been considered to be a far cry from religion, even as the authors have criticized it, but from a post- secular point of view, it is shown how closely social criticism, the central theme of the Austin novel, is connected to the faith and religious worldview of each writer. In other words, Austin and Dickens' novels are a work that illustrates the distortions between literature and religion created by secular criticism, which provides a more integrated picture of the boundaries between the two who were trapped in secular criticism.
