Nam Young-sook et al.: Storks and Wetlands

This book concerns wetlands, which serve as feeding grounds, habitats, playgrounds, and living spaces for Oriental storks, which must coexist with humanity. The importance of wetland conservation for biodiversity preservation cannot be overemphasized as an alternative to overcome the COVID-19 phenomenon currently plunging the world into chaos. Chapter 1 examines the value of wetlands from the perspective of sustainable development and presents case studies of wetland conservation as sustainable habitats for Oriental storks. Chapter 2 introduces the current status of wetlands in Japan under the Ramsar Convention, wetland culture, and future challenges regarding wetland conservation and culture in Japan. Chapter 3 is composed of content on the characteristics of major Oriental stork habitats in Korea—including paddy wetlands, rivers, reservoirs, tidal flats, and floodplains—and the foraging behaviors of Oriental storks in each wetland, in order to help understand the various types of wetlands utilized by Oriental storks. Chapter 4 details Oriental stork conservation strategies and achievements within Russian nature reserves over the 20-year period from 1999 to 2019, as well as major Oriental stork breeding grounds near the Amur River basin. Chapter 5 explains Korea's Wetland Conservation Act, management system and current status, and wetland survey projects, and presents policy measures for the conservation of Oriental Stork habitats. Chapter 6 describes the current status of wetlands in Chungcheongbuk-do and its ordinances on wetland conservation and management for local case studies, and outlines the Chungcheongbuk-do Wetland Conservation Roadmap. In a sustainable society, we can envision a world where Oriental Storks and humans coexist. In Chapter 7, artist Kim Kyung-sun portrays these fragmentary aspects through the camera lens.
