*The Theory of Neo-colonialism* addresses "colonialism without colonies"—or "neo-colonialism"—in which global capitalism, symbolized by global cities and multinational corporations, creates new forms of exploitation-exploitation and domination relationships regardless of whether a country is developed or developing, alongside the massive current of globalization. This book begins within the context that colonial policy studies of the imperialist era shifted their direction toward regional studies, international economics, and ultimately international relations, and that ambiguous approaches to colonial issues and the forgetting of colonies led to a positivism of colonialism. Examples of this shift from forgetting to affirming colonialism can be found not only in Japan but also in the multiculturalism spread from former British colonies such as the United States, Canada, and Australia, as well as in the immigration policies of various nations and the formation of the European Union.
