A few days after the German Third Reich merged Austria in March 1938, the new regime announced plans to build concentration camps in Austria. The SS considered further camp construction, foreseeing a surge in the number of prisoners. At the same time, the SS command was planning on creating a building-up industry. The SS wanted to justify the expansion of the concentration camps and to bring about the financial reverses of the SS by monopolizing their available labor force. The SS set out to look for camp sites to achieve their economic goals, and finally they found Mauthausen and Guzhen, with their granite quarry nearby. The SS company was planning to provide the prisoners with quarries of Germany's Third Reich and building materials for the concentration camps. On August 8, 1938, the first train to take prisoners from the Dachau concentration camp arrived in Mauthausen. The prisoners were not only forced to work for the camp they were being imprisoned but also involved in the development and expansion of granite quarries. Prisoners had to work under extremely harsh conditions. He had to live in the danger of serious accidents, not only of being exposed to many diseases without adequate medical care, but also of not knowing when to come. The hard work process led to constant assault by the SS. The 1938 Maruthausen concentration camp was held in prison by about 330,000 people until the release of the troops in 1945, and over 120,000 of them died.
