Description

The National Conference of Marine Culture Scholars is a specialized academic conference on marine culture that has been held through the cooperation of the Institute of Island Culture at Mokpo National University, which has led research, surveys, and education on island and marine culture for over 40 years, and the National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage, which has spearheaded the excavation and research of marine cultural heritage. Its purpose is to re-recognize the importance of the ocean, assess the status of Korea as a maritime power, and advocate that marine culture is an important resource for the future of humanity. Through this conference, a nationwide network of marine culture researchers has been formed, research achievements related to islands and the ocean have been shared, and ocean-related issues have been produced, distributed, and consumed as new discourses for the future. Since its inception in Mokpo in 2009, the conference has moved through Samcheok (2011), Yeosu (2012, 2013), Gyeongju (2014), Mokpo (2015), Dangjin (2016), Gunsan (2017), Ansan (2018), and Jeju (2019), establishing itself as Korea's representative comprehensive academic conference on islands and the ocean where approximately 200 topics are presented and discussed annually. Through this, the number of researchers with interest in and affection for the sea and islands has increased significantly, resulting in 1,635 research presentations related to islands and marine life over 10 sessions. This book reviews and diagnoses the achievements of marine culture research conducted over the 10 sessions and presents prospects for new marine culture research. Along with a comprehensive analysis, it presents diagnoses and outlooks by field, including marine archaeology, maritime history, marine ecology, marine folklore, marine anthropology, marine tourism, marine literature, and marine policy.
