I agonized over the purchase, but this book did not disappoint. I would put it among the best books I bought this year: the plot far exceeded my expectations, and every character was layered and appealing.

The book I chose this time was Sunset, by Kanae Minato, with a striking illustration that suits the title. This was my first time reading a mystery by Kanae Minato. I heard that she began writing seriously after turning 30, made her literary debut after winning a newcomer award for mystery fiction, and started gaining recognition as a mystery writer. She quickly became a famous author with her novel Confessions. She has written many works, including Confessions, Penance, Girl, Case, and

A solid story with a fast pace. Kanae Minato is compelling in the way she explores human nature through psychological portrayals. Her new novel Sunset, which we have not seen from her in a while, was nominated for the Naoki Prize and adapted into a Japanese TV drama that became a ratings hit. I would like to introduce Sunset while looking forward to the shocking truth that two women pursuing an unprecedented case will encounter, and to the story and psychological portraiture it will offer.

The story opens with a girl sent out onto a balcony. As may be true for most people, I have never experienced anything like that in my life. It also brought to mind a case in our country in which someone used the pretense of friendship to send a girl onto a balcony, abuse her, and ultimately cause her death, so honestly I did not feel very good. I also could not shake the bitterness of seeing the narrator say it was not abuse. Abuse does not require someone to hit you. This is a story that

I discovered author Kanae Minato through Confessions. Thanks to her books, including Motherhood, Cases, and Night Viewing Ferris Wheel, which show human nature, needs, and desires amid social issues, I kept noticing her new novel Sunset and wanted to read it. Chihiro Kai, who works as an assistant writer, receives a letter from famous film director Kaori Hasebe and learns that the film is based on a family murder that took place in Chihiro's hometown fifteen years ago. A reclusive man stabbed

This work is based on a drama series that aired on Japan's WOWOW TV last year. I happened to see the film based on Kanae Minato's Motherhood, and it stayed in my mind for a long time. After that, I became curious about Minato and wanted to read her new book as soon as it came out. Here are two women trying to uncover the truth about the Sasazukacho family murder from fifteen years ago. Film director Kaori Hasebe commissions Kai Mahiro to write a screenplay so she can reveal the truth and make a

Sunset contains several intertwined events: the Sasazukacho family murder fifteen years ago, in which a reclusive man killed his younger sister and parents; the traffic accident involving Chiho Kai, older sister of Chihiro (Mahiro) Kai, who was commissioned by a star director because the story was set in her hometown; and the story of Kaori Hasebe, now a star director, who struggled with her mother's expectations and her father's suicide during childhood. While researching the case for her

And then another 15 years passed. / p. 32 This is a novel by Japanese author Kanae Minato. The first work that probably comes to mind when you hear her name is Confessions, which was also made into a film. As I mentioned in another book I read before, that was how I first came to know the author. I understand that its somewhat shocking and unconventional story left a strong impression on many people, and it did the same for me. Its ending is still vivid enough to stick in my mind. Then last

The Sasazukacho family murder is at the heart of this novel, but it has a different feel from fast-paced mysteries. The story moves at what seems like a slow pace, yet the farther I read, the more absorbed I became, and I stayed focused through the end. Each story unfolds through a chance trigger. Fifteen years later, Kaori Hasebe has become a director and gained fame after winning an award for her autobiographical story, One Hour Earlier. Chihiro Kai, younger sister of Chiho Kai, works as a

There are definitely Japanese authors whose books I reach for, such as Keigo Higashino, Haruki Murakami, and Hitonari Tsuji. I am not very familiar with women writers, but I became interested when I heard translator Kim Nan-ju had translated this book into Korean. I think one of Kanae Minato's great strengths is her absorbing prose and sentences, even in a long novel. It made me curious about her other works, and I hear the drama based on this book aired in Japan in September 2023. Readers who
