How will the church of essence on this earth live out its calling and fulfill it? This book provides the answer to that question.
This book provides the answer to the question: What is the calling of the church, centering on Leslie Newbigin's ecclesiology?
I purchased this because I was curious about the perspective of Leslie Newbigin, a key figure regarding the missional church. It seems like it will be a good guide to Newbigin.
Mission is what makes the church truly the church. This book correctly establishes that idea.
Michael Gohin: The Church's Calling
This book is Michael Goheen's masterful organization and development of the missional ecclesiology shaped by the life and ministry of Leslie Newbigin. Although the modern era is defined as a "post-Christian society" or a "post-Christian world," questions regarding the church have not diminished at all compared to the past; on the contrary, they demand more fundamental answers regarding today's issues. Ecclesiology now requires not merely the exploration of phenomena presupposing a Christian society, but rather questions about tradition and reality, and reflection on practice and biblical archetypes. Michael Goheen, who has studied and followed Leslie Newbigin throughout his life in both academia and ministry, goes beyond his doctoral dissertation from over twenty years ago—which was a specialized study of Newbigin—to present "Leslie Newbigin's Missional Ecclesiology" for a broader audience by utilizing not only Newbigin's writings but also previously inaccessible lectures and unpublished materials. In this book, readers come to think about the church in light of the Kingdom of God and God’s mission, the mission of Jesus and the early church, and the world and ‘culture.’ Through this, they learn that understanding the church requires considering tradition and institutions without forgetting their sources, and that mission should be considered not as one of the church’s functions, but from the perspective of a missional ecclesiology that defines the church’s identity.
