Description

What stories did European children hear long ago, back when tigers smoked? A treasure trove of folktales to read alongside Greek and Roman mythology and build literacy and emotional awareness. Folktales is a broad term for myths, legends, and folk stories passed down among peoples. People have loved stories since ancient times. Long before writing or paper existed, tales were passed endlessly from one generation to the next by parents and grandparents. They sometimes became part of a people’s shared identity, helped raise children well, or offered a way to release feelings held inside. Stories are one of humanity’s brightest inheritances. We grew up hearing tales from “the days when tigers smoked.” What folktales did European children hear long ago? Before the Brothers Grimm collected fairy tales, before märchen drifted through Europe’s forests—aren’t you curious about the roots of those stories, from the distant past? Here is a gem of a series: the first collection of Greek folktales published in Korea. The second story in Yeollimwon Children’s Greek and Roman Folktales is *The Wedding Dress That Fit Inside a Walnut*! Why did a beautiful wedding dress slip inside a walnut shell? Read the story, build literacy, and open a treasure chest of feelings. Once upon a time, there was a king with ten sons. He also had an apple tree that bore delicious red apples. Whenever he had the chance, the king bragged to people about his sons and his apple tree. One day, however, the people who went to pick apples returned empty-handed.

This is the second volume of Greek and Roman Folktales, *The Dress Inside a Walnut*. Since I have read many different Greek mythology books, I assumed this was another Greek and Roman mythology book for children. It turned out to be Greek and Roman folktales. Greek mythology, nicknamed a treasure trove of imagination, is widely read by children and adults alike; these stories about the gods continue to influence us thousands of years later. Even if you do not know much about Greek mythology,

While my child was gradually learning a little about mythology and natural phenomena through Greek and Roman mythology comics, I was hoping very much that they would read books with substantial text, rather than educational comics. Then we found a book on a subject my child likes, something they might find interesting, just like Greek and Roman mythology. Greek and Roman Folktales!—a familiar title that starts with ‘Greek and Roman.’ It’s The Dress Inside the Walnut. At first, my child picked

If the Greek and Roman mythology we read as children is about gods and goddesses with absolute power who resemble humans, Greek and Roman folktales are about kings, princes, and princesses beneath the gods. They feel like familiar stories passed down orally. Menelaos Stefanides, author of *Greek and Roman Folktales 2: The Dress Inside a Walnut*, studied Greek mythology for decades before discovering beautiful folktales, which inspired him to write the series. Folktales share qualities with folk

My son, who had enjoyed reading Greek mythology, asked, “Why is this a folktale? A folktale?” I explained what a folktale was, and he said, “Oh! Like a folk story!” He had read a book of folk stories recently. I feel so proud in moments like that 😁✨️ What about old European stories? I wondered whether cultural differences might make them hard to understand. A dress that fits inside a walnut... that’s where our imaginations began 🤣🤣 But then it starts, “Once upon a time, there was a king with

Here is my child’s review. About the book. This is a fun, mysterious story that seems to be one of the Greek and Roman folktales. I’ll tell you a little about it! The main character is an ordinary man who goes with the princes to fight a monster. After defeating it, he finds a beautiful woman and promises that if they meet again, she will wear the dress inside a walnut and become his bride. But the princes betray him and take the woman to the palace. The king even threatens her, insisting she

How long has it been since I last heard stories that began, “Once upon a time—back when tigers smoked tobacco”? I remember loving those traditional tales as a child. They could be scary and fun, and I liked the ending: “And they lived happily ever after.” As an adult, I have encountered folktales again. I did not realize as a child that folktales and traditional stories are emotional treasures that build literacy. I only understand that now.

The theme of *The Dress Inside a Walnut* is true courage: the courage of Redhead, who overcame fear; the ten princes, who could not; and the princess’s faithfulness and love as she waits for the young man who saved her life. Sometimes we meet people who stand up against injustice in difficult circumstances. You can encounter true courage in this moving volume of *Greek and Roman Folktales*. I’m also looking forward to volume three, *The Marble Princess*, about perseverance and kindness.
