It is also very helpful for studying Chinese characters. The annotations are detailed and excellent. There is no criticism. It is very good to read Professor Dool’s *Mencius: The Way of Man* alongside this to compare it with modern politics.
This is a reference book for Rhyu Si-min's *Reading of Youth*. I purchased it because it is excellent for learning Chinese character pronunciation and the interpretation is outstanding.
Mencius is so cool... While the Analects felt a bit boring, Mencius is very interesting, along with its magnificent grandeur. I also like that it is structured in a way that is suitable for studying Classical Chinese.
I have read three volumes of Mencius by different translators, and I think they are fairly good. However, the arrangement of the sentences does not make the content particularly easy to grasp. It feels like it is arranged to be suitable for studying classical Chinese reading comprehension.
Mencius is filled with precious teachings. There are the chapters on "Hoyeonjigi" (vast spirit) in the Gongsun Chu chapter and "Dongsiminseong" (moving the mind and forgiving nature) in the Gaozi chapter, among others. The opening passage, known for the line, "Your Majesty, why do you speak of profit? There is only benevolence and righteousness," is also a masterpiece.
