Marcel Proust: Before the night comes

Marcel Proust, who rose to the ranks of the greatest writers of the 20th century with his single work *In Search of Lost Time*; the short stories he experimented with in the most intimate places during his twenties. Considered one of the greatest writers of the 20th century and praised as the "novelist's novelist," Marcel Proust (1871-1922) instantly ascended to the pinnacle of world literary history with his single work, *In Search of Lost Time*. To mark the 100th anniversary of his death, a collection of previously unpublished short stories written during his youth, *Before Night Falls*, has been published in Korea for the first time through a translation by Professor Yoo Ye-jin of Yonsei University. All the works included in this book were written by Proust in his early to mid-twenties, offering a glimpse into the spirited yet challenging side of the great writer during his younger years. The book is divided into two parts. The six stories in Part 1 were published during Proust's lifetime, while the twelve stories in Part 2 are manuscripts discovered after his death. All 18 pieces are being introduced to Korea for the first time, and among them are some that are still immature or unfinished. However, one can see that the major themes of "impossible love" and "art as salvation"—addressed in *In Search of Lost Time*, published in his 40s when his literary maturity had fully blossomed—were already concretized in the mind of the author Proust at this time. Readers will enjoy the pleasure of glimpsing the literary experiments and adventures Proust undertook leading up to the writing of this masterpiece. The translation was undertaken by Yoo Ye-jin, a professor in the Department of French Language and Literature at Yonsei University, a Proust specialist who has translated and written numerous books related to the author.
