Description

Published as one volume in the famous ‘Repères’ (‘Landmarks, Guides’) series from the French publisher Découverte, this book discusses the main aspects of Wittgenstein’s thought, which today influences not only academia but popular culture as well. Although Wittgenstein’s thought has many different facets, introductions to it have mostly centered on his early and later philosophy of logic and language. Those areas are certainly important, but here the author also gives a concise introduction to points essential for understanding Wittgenstein today: his ethical-aesthetic perspective and religious views; his attitudes toward mathematics, science, and culture; his natural-historical and anthropological approach and relationship with psychoanalysis; and his late epistemological thought. The author also devotes the first chapter to his life from a biographical perspective, and in several later chapters provides separate sidebars on relationships with people who mattered to his philosophical life for various reasons, as well as interesting anecdotes. Since Korean introductions and research on Wittgenstein have so far relied mainly on English-language and German-language literature, this French-written book broadens our understanding by letting us glimpse the trends and level of Wittgenstein scholarship in the French-speaking world.

This is a new book from 21st Century Cultural Institute, which publishes noteworthy philosophy and academic books. I picked it up because it looked like an introductory guide that could help me understand the fascinating but difficult philosopher ‘Wittgenstein.’ First, the editing is clean and considerate of readers’ convenience, and I would like to praise the kindness and care evident in the translator’s work. Opinions of Wittgenstein are divided at the extremes: the greatest philosopher of

Wittgenstein had an immense influence on modern philosophy. Yet his writing is not widely read by the general public. This book deals with Wittgenstein’s writings, life, and thought. It explains the thought of Wittgenstein, famous for its difficulty, so that ordinary readers can understand it. I think it is just right for general readers interested in Wittgenstein but hesitant to read his books because they seem difficult. The author maintains a neutral attitude as Wittgenstein’s guide. For

Just the phrase ‘the philosopher for philosophers’ makes this seem very difficult, but I read an introduction to Wittgenstein, who is said to be hard for non-philosophers to approach. This book has particular value in that it accommodates non-philosophers. It also discusses the various aspects of Wittgenstein’s thought in its main points, helping us understand it through his ethical-aesthetic perspective and religious views, his attitudes toward mathematics, science, and culture, his

Book review: An Introduction to Wittgenstein — Lola Younes — 21st Century Cultural Institute. A philosopher’s teachings seem to help us in life even as time passes. Sometimes we learn something we never knew, and sometimes we relearn something we knew already but had not understood. In that sense, the philosophy of life taught by history ultimately shows us how to live rightly. But at times it is difficult to accept the teachings of sages as they are. The interpretation of meaning is one issue,

First impression. What more is there to say? Wittgenstein, whom Keynes revered as a god, is right there on the cover. No other decoration, pattern, or picture is needed. It makes an impressive cover all by itself. Key point: There are methods and paths for thinking, too. He is not just a senior colleague or schoolteacher. You can experience the way of thinking and mechanism of argumentation of a philosopher who left a mark on human history. Of course, it is difficult and no easy matter. Still,

This book is an introduction to the philosophical thought of Wittgenstein, counted among the twentieth century’s genius philosophers, explained on the basis of his writings and research materials. It organizes his philosophical works and themes into three categories and presents them across four sections alongside his life: ‘The Journey of a Wandering Philosopher’; ‘The Glory and Misfortune of Logical Atomism: The Early Wittgenstein’; ‘The Higher: Ethics, the Mystical, and Aesthetics’; and ‘The

The author is a scholar at Saint Joseph University in Beirut. The back cover calls it ‘a French-language introduction to Wittgenstein.’ Lebanon came under French administration after World War I; in fact, in the nineteenth century Napoleon I had already expanded his power around the Mediterranean and taken the region from the Turks. Saint Joseph University is an educational institution established in Beirut by Jesuit missionaries during the French Third Republic. Even the French title on the

The more I learn about Wittgenstein’s life, the more astonished I am. I was at a loss for words when I read that he enlisted voluntarily when World War I broke out and wrote in a battlefield where shells were flying. Did he really want to test himself at the boundary between life and death? I am truly curious about how he could have such mental strength. How much did he want to know about life to go somewhere he could lose his life and write... Watching Wittgenstein’s life made me think I

Découvertes Gallimard, from the French publisher Découvertes, is a pocket encyclopedia series that gathers the great knowledge and cultural heritage humanity has built from antiquity to the present by subject. The first volume, À la recherche de l’Égypte oubliée (Korean edition: In Search of Forgotten Egypt), was published in 1986. This book is one of the series. In his Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, Wittgenstein discusses the meaning of life or existence and ethics, but his starting point is

I sometimes remember encountering Wittgenstein’s theories in humanities books. They were complicated and difficult, but because they were mentioned in books whether Korean or translated from other languages, I gradually became familiar with his works and philosophical terms without realizing it. I had encountered quite a bit about what Wittgenstein wrote, but knew nothing at all about his life. When I saw the introduction saying that the book translated and published by 21st Century Cultural
