Description

This book introduces 22 artists whose work has endured across generations and more than 130 masterpieces born from their lives. Lee Wonyul, author of the Herald Business’s popular Huam-dong Art Museum column, vividly conveys the stories behind art and artists’ lives. Michelangelo defied power to complete his life’s masterwork; Velazquez portrayed marginalized people without prejudice; Whistler painted America’s “Mother” despite his ambivalent relationship with his own mother; Renoir painted flowers, women, and life’s joy despite hardship; and Munch turned depression, anxiety, and fear of death into creative forces. These stories of love, passion, hope, resolve, madness, and adversity invite readers to reflect on their lives and find their own decisive painting.

I’ve followed journalist Lee Wonyul’s Huam-dong Art Museum column. Its detailed, fascinating stories come from his broad knowledge of art, and I was delighted to see them collected in a book. The introduction discusses Almond Blossoms, painted for Van Gogh’s nephew’s birth. The author says masterpieces preserve a life and a moment; knowing their stories makes a real difference. Blending historical facts with imagination, the book reads like a novel. I especially choose Munch among the 22

As a longtime reader of Huam-dong Art Museum, I eagerly opened journalist Lee Wonyul’s new book. Its immersive stories follow 22 artists who lived fiercely. The final chapter on Frida Kahlo brought back scenes from the movie Frida, which I saw over 20 years ago. The writing was so absorbing that I couldn’t tell whether the images were old memories or my imagination. I made time to review this vivid, entertaining, moving book because it had no reviews. I recommend it to anyone interested in art;
