Lee Jae-won: The Indochina War and French Colonial Ideology

The purpose of this book is not to describe the major wars in the Indochina War, or the war of colonial liberation between France and Vietnam. What we're suggesting is a study of the French response and position to this war. Let's look at the history of collective ideology, particularly of colonial ideology. In French consciousness, the Indian or the Indochina or the colonial issues were taking over, and we're going to look at how it was expressed during the war. Are the French, weakened by World War II, ready to make sacrifices by sending troops to the colonies more than 10,000 miles from home, faced with the massive mission of the postwar National Reconstruction? When the crisis in Indochina came, how did colonialism come out? What opposition did the Indochina War encounter? The bottom line is to look at how much of a burden the colonial problem was in French consciousness during the war. As historian Gerrelde noted, “the colonial ideology is too much of a place in modern French emotional and psychological history to be able to overcome the temptation to answer these questions.”.
