I was able to learn in an accessible way from the knowledge a doctor can share. I started the book and enjoyed reading the whole thing in one sitting.
As I am getting married in middle age, pregnancy has been the part that worries and frightens me most. Even though I am older, I found the courage to take a strong interest in pregnancy and childbirth. In that sense, the new book A Preview of Pregnancy and Childbirth, published at the end of May this year, has helped me in many ways because pregnancy and birth felt unfamiliar and frightening. The author, Lee Jae-il, is a father of two and a practicing obstetrician. He runs the YouTube channel
Lee Jae-il: Pregnancy and childbirth preview
“Is it safe to take cold medicine during pregnancy?” “I heard that if morning sickness suddenly stops, it means a miscarriage. Is that true?” “Which is better, vaginal delivery or a C-section?” Expectant parents awaiting their first pregnancy, birth, and baby have many questions. But appointments are short, and it is hard to ask everything. Online, there is so much conflicting information that it can be confusing to know what is reliable. It is understandable that dramatic, unusual stories attract attention and make pregnancy and childbirth frightening. But pregnancy and childbirth are not only difficult and scary. The author, an obstetrician and a father, says understanding the physical and emotional changes during pregnancy in advance can reduce these fears. He also explains that knowing the essentials for each week of pregnancy, such as when to go to the hospital and what to be especially careful about, can make it possible to have a healthy pregnancy and birth without radically changing your life. Over the 40 weeks of pregnancy, the most important thing to remember is that when the mother is happy, the baby is healthy too. There are many misconceptions about pregnancy and childbirth. They may come from a wish for the baby’s health, but can instead make expectant parents afraid. One example is prenatal education that makes the mother’s life harder: solving The Principles of Mathematics to improve the baby’s math skills, or emphasizing bed rest so the baby will not be harmed. In fact, such practices are not good for the mother or the baby.
