Lee Hoon: Integrated art play that opens up communication and empathy

“I hope a specialized institution will take this child in. They need special care and psychiatric treatment. If we leave things as they are, someone in the future will become a victim of violence...” These are some of the words spoken by a teacher who had worked in education for 28 years. After doing her best to counsel a student in her care, she finally gave up and asked the author to treat the student. The author began helping the student through ten sessions of integrated arts play. When the final session ended, the student hugged the author tightly and said, “Please don't go, teacher.” This experience became the powerful motivation for the author to write this book: “If only there had been one person to hold this child's hand, play together, and laugh together, the child would not have been so lonely.” Unlike “integrated arts therapy,” the term “integrated arts play” is still unfamiliar to many of us. This passage reveals the core of the book. Just as art can play a therapeutic role through its creativity, the author became convinced that play's power, combined with artistic creativity, could heal people's inner lives. The author created various activities and used them in real settings, comforting many people and helping them experience healing. To share this experience, the book divides integrated arts play into four areas and introduces more than 60 specific activities and examples of how they are used.
