Description

This book argues that Korean ancient history still contains many uncorrected errors, from the reading of proper names to pronunciation, terminology, and concepts. It raises questions about these issues and offers answers, challenging many claims people have accepted as obvious simply because others repeat them. For example, it argues that the “kingdom of iron” was Silla, not Gaya, and that the idea of the “Six Gaya” is a constructed history. It also says the person who painted the murals in the main hall of Horyuji was a Baekje-descended figure, not the Goguryeo monk Damjing, calling this a representative case of historical distortion. The many overlapping discussions make the book dense with historical verification. In particular, it includes photographs taken directly by the author of artifacts and sites that were lost in the last century or whose earlier appearance can no longer be seen: a Buyeo woman figurine once held at the Jilin City Museum in China, the uninscribed stone monument at Mongchontoseong, portraits of King Guhyeong of Sancheong and his queen, and the Tang Bridge in Mungyeong. These are objects and sites that can no longer be accessed or no longer survive in their old form.

Historical sources must be examined down to the smallest details. The author’s insight is truly impressive.
