Description

In the future of corrections, it is expected that a paradigm based on a shared communal consciousness among members of society will take root, moving beyond the current paradigm where the state unilaterally punishes or educates criminals. This is possible when a consciousness of "accomplice"—that we can all be perpetrators—and a consciousness of "sharing"—that we can all be victims—become universal, moving beyond the dichotomous definition that classifies members of society as "good people" or "bad people" based on judicial decisions. In other words, this can be achieved through the establishment of a sense of communal responsibility internalized through the process of self-reflection and an other-centered self-identity that stands with neighbors in their unfortunate circumstances.
