This textbook is an introductory text covering the most fundamental aspects of fashion design. In the title and most frequently used term "fashion design," "fashion" refers to attire; it is a comprehensive concept encompassing all forms of clothing that envelop the human body, accessories worn for decorative or functional purposes, and everything added to the body. Bearing these characteristics in mind, this book, like most introductory design texts, covers design elements and principles as its primary content. Each chapter begins with an overview, learning objectives, and key terms, and concludes with the main text and exercises. We have strived to assist in understanding and applying concepts by utilizing various recent fashion design case studies. This textbook was written for fashion majors as well as non-majors—consumers of various fashion and design products. For fashion majors, it aims to help them develop their aptitudes and career paths within the broad fashion and textile industries by understanding the attributes of fashion products, particularly their formative properties. For non-majors, it seeks to help cultivate a comprehensive understanding of visual media and aesthetic sensibility through the analysis of various fashion design styles. In modern society, we are exposed to countless visualized information, so even those who are not design experts show a distinct difference in information processing ability compared to those who lack visual sensitivity, aesthetic sense, and experience in processing visual information. Therefore, even for non-majors, studying fashion design will help develop visual literacy and become a smart consumer.
