Description

*In Search of Korea’s Old Neighborhood Restaurants* tells stories about warm meals infused with the Korean sense of affection. It focuses on longtime restaurants serving regional specialties in the provinces and accessible old establishments in Seoul—not fancy food eaten with a fork and knife or restaurants where everything is arranged with precision, but places where we can comfortably eat anywhere, anytime. It adds details about regional dishes’ origins and restaurants’ histories, making the meals even more appetizing.

I bought the book after seeing the author give a talk on regional food at Starfield Library’s Byeolmadang Library. I had thought domestic travel was dull and always wondered where to go abroad. I found it fresh to learn that food culture brought by

This useful book explains why a dish became a regional specialty, rather than simply saying it tastes good. Food humanities books can be difficult for general readers, but this one is engaging and flows easily. I knew Busan was famous for pork and rice soup, but its history and social structure explaining how it became a local dish were enlightening. The section on Samcheok gomchit-guk was fascinating too, including the story that Samcheok was where Goryeo’s fall and Joseon’s beginnings

This book is packed with useful, unexpected information about regional dishes and old restaurants around Korea—enough to rival food-show host Hur Young-man. I live in Seoul and was glad to learn about restaurants I still have not visited. After reading, I wanted to set off on a food tour across the country right away!
