I received this book as a gift. I had barely read for quite a while, but I was able to settle in and focus on it for the first time in ages! As someone who works in education and as a parent, I feel this book helps me look back on what has happened so far and prepare for what lies ahead. I was truly amazed by the creative educational approach, which was every bit as imaginative as the children themselves. I am happy and grateful to encounter in this book the hard work and accomplishments of
I can feel the children's bright eyes and excited hearts as they joyfully explore the vast field called “Bongam.” This is an easy and enjoyable education book, and I would recommend it to parents raising young children.
Kwon Jeong-eon: A classroom that doesn't teach
Kwon Jeong-eon, who retired after serving as a school principal following roles as an education supervisor and senior education supervisor, has gathered into one book the story of 19 years spent meeting children in an after-school classroom outside the school system. In 2005, the author began a new educational journey by putting a sign reading “Bongam Educational Research Center” on Room 305 of Namsan Jugong Apartments. For 19 years, the author freely practiced the creative education they had dreamed of since their teaching days. Looking back on those years and organizing the records, the author realizes that the true protagonists of Bongam's 19 years were the children who grew up alongside them. As the table of contents shows, the book begins with “Not Teaching in the Usual Way” (Chapter 1), then takes children out of the cramped study room and often into the wide-open “World of Nature” (Chapter 2). “Traveling Through History” (Chapter 3), “With Living Writing” (Chapter 4), and “Cultivating New Ideas” (Chapter 5) organize the many programs for Bongam's children by area, including trips, writing, and creativity classes. Readers encounter lively moments in which children ask and answer their own questions, then express what they have learned. What enabled Bongam to plan and carry out such a wide variety of educational programs for 19 years? This record clearly shows that it was grounded in a teacher's unhurried way of seeing children as they are, along with the boundless trust and support of their parents.
