Korea Traditional Dance Association: The Four Great Master Dancers of Traditional Dance
The purpose of this book is to shed light on the value and status of traditional dance by Han Young-sook, Kang Sun-young, Kim Suk-ja, and Lee Mae-bang, who were elevated to the ranks of holders of National Intangible Cultural Heritage under the Cultural Heritage Protection Act enacted in 1961. For the past seven years, the Korea Traditional Dance Association has made every effort to help increase accessibility to and understanding of traditional dance for everyone living in this era. This task can be considered the historical mission of researchers and inheritors who are solely dedicated to inheriting and developing traditional dance. Thus, taking a vigorous step toward the future as an extension of our given duty, we held an academic forum on January 12, 2019, under the theme of "The Artistic Value and Status of the Four Great Master Dancers." This is intended to elevate the artistic and intangible cultural heritage value of the traditional dances left behind by the four great master dancers—Han Young-sook, Kang Sun-young, Kim Suk-ja, and Lee Mae-bang—who are holders of National Intangible Cultural Heritage and faithfully fulfilled their roles as successors to traditional dance in the mid-to-late 20th century. This work is also necessary for securing academic materials regarding the <Establishment of the Art Award and Festival for the Four Great Master Dancers of Korean Traditional Dance>. Now, a total of six papers, including two keynote presentations and four research papers presented at the academic forum, are being revised and supplemented to be published as a single book.
