Description

Due to the recent sustained growth of the global construction market, the market size in 2020 is estimated to reach $11.6 trillion, a 3.4% increase compared to 2019. In particular, growth of around 5% is projected to continue until 2025 as the plant construction market expands, driven by increased infrastructure investment in developing countries in Asia and the Middle East, as well as the construction of plant facilities in oil-producing nations. In the case of Korea, overseas construction orders have grown annually since 2006, reaching $71.6 billion in 2010 and $66.1 billion in 2014. Although performance levels only ranged from $20 billion to $40 billion from 2015 due to the deterioration of the global economic situation, a gradual increase in orders is expected starting in 2021. Overseas construction, which has emerged as an export industry, sees the plant sector accounting for over 60% of total volume; with a global plant market share of approximately 10.5%, Korea holds the fourth-largest position worldwide. This can be attributed to favorable performance in sectors such as power generation, petrochemicals, and gas processing, where domestic companies hold a high share of the market, particularly in Asia and the Middle East. However, numerous challenges remain stemming from this external boom. Specifically, there is an urgent need not only to strengthen competitiveness in specialized technology, cost management, and project control across various fields—including power plants, desalination facilities, oil and gas facilities, petrochemical facilities, offshore facilities, and solar power facilities—but also to cultivate a workforce of plant specialists to address the severe shortage.
