Description

Major media outlets in our society, including newspapers and broadcasters, suffer from unusually low credibility when it comes to reporting on North Korea. While they confidently report the executions and purges of key North Korean political leaders under the guise of "scoops," there are countless instances where these figures are later reinstated. The fact that this is not a problem limited to just one or two media organizations indicates that there are structural factors or practices at play in the media's reporting on North Korea. The starting point of this book is the critical question: "Why do the media's frequent errors regarding North Korea not improve?" While the core of the book lies in analyzing North Korea-related reporting and developing countermeasures, the recognition and diagnosis that these errors are deeply connected to today's digital information society expands the scope of the issue to include the phenomenon of fake news in the information age. This book is composed of four chapters. Chapter 1 covers examples and types of errors and false information regarding North Korea, as well as the resulting damages. Chapter 2 examines why errors concerning North Korea occur, the structural factors that cause them, and the reporting practices and background of the media industry. Chapter 3 presents methods for users to identify errors and false, distorted information in an infodemic environment. Chapter 4 argues that misinformation regarding North Korea is not merely a problem of media reporting, but is closely related to human cognitive tendencies that are vulnerable to false information.
