Description

High school student Hato lives alone with his mother after losing his father in a sudden accident. With no particular dreams, he spends his days listlessly working part-time at a flower shop. His mother, consumed by health anxiety, forces him to eat only vegetables; his teachers impose a uniform education; and his classmates casually bully others. Hato thinks there is nothing he can do but endure until he grows up and can forget this time. One day, he delivers flowers to a patient named Sono Makina. After learning that the young and beautiful Makina has a terminal rare disease that causes plants to grow inside her body, Hato’s life is shaken to its core. Makina, who is trying to accept death calmly, also begins to realize what she wants to leave behind and what she must do while she is still alive after Hato suddenly enters her life, and she spends time with him. Through being with Makina, Hato gradually finds the courage to escape the stifling reality surrounding him. But one unexpected tragedy follows another, and when Hato makes the most important decision of his life, their fates become intricately entangled.

Hello, My Ruthless Queen is a story about Hato, who lives with a mother, starts a part-time job at a flower shop, and delivers flowers to a hospital, where the events unfold. I think it would be good for young people who are wandering and unsure what to do with their lives to read at least once. At first, Hato also develops conflict with a mother without having a proper conversation. The psychological feelings that you may have experienced while spending time with friends as a student are well

Hello, My Ruthless Queen by Kogarashi Waon won the 24th Dengeki Novel Prize. It features a boy named Arisaka Hato and Sono Makina. The book lets us read in detail how the fateful events before them become pieces of a life puzzle, and how those pieces come together to form a new life. Hato stands between oppression and resentment; Makina urges reflection and growth. Hato lives with a mother and appears as a helpless boy without a father. Unlike the mother, who wants Hato to become a civil

The book I chose this time is Hello, My Ruthless Queen, a new love story by Kogarashi Waon, winner of the grand prize at the 24th Dengeki Novel Prize. Its title and cover illustration made me think of a scene from a comic. Waon debuted with the romance novel I’m Waiting for You Above This Sky Forever, which became very popular in Japan and won the Dengeki Novel Prize. This is the author’s latest work. The comic-like title and cover made me curious about how the story would unfold. After reading

I fell for you at first sight, my captivating dear. Hello, My Ruthless Queen is a novel by Kogarashi Waon. The protagonist, Arisaka Hato, appears to be an ordinary high-school student. But being ordinary may take quite a lot of effort. Hato is having a very hard time after a father’s death because a mother, absorbed in an online health community, has filled the house with plants and insists that meals consist almost entirely of vegetables. Hato hides how difficult it is. A mother is so sincere

After Hato’s father suddenly dies of heart failure, Hato’s grief-stricken mother becomes absorbed in an online health group, insists on plant therapy and organic ingredients, and leaves Hato unable to eat proper meals. Hato starts working part-time at a flower shop, not because Hato loves flowers, but because a high school student needs a guardian’s permission to work. As the mother’s fanatical love of plants grows, Hato’s future becomes increasingly bleak, and Hato becomes more convinced that

Period: 2024/06/07–2024/06/09. I started reading because of the striking cover and its description of a beautiful, heartrending love story. It’s only about 250 pages, but the story unfolds with enough depth from the protagonists’ meeting through their separation and what follows that it never felt lacking in substance. From the prologue, it’s easy to guess that the heroine will die of a rare disease. The story seems familiar, but I suspected Hato’s (the male lead’s) depression might be related

As soon as it was published, people there were praising it with comments like “It’s fascinating” and “Why did it take so long to publish?” Word spread through social media, both online and offline, and local bookstores. Readers of all ages expressed their affection for the work, and even mystery writers we know had praised it, which made me even more excited. I wondered when we would be able to read it in Korea—or thought, “If only I had studied Japanese...” and waited eagerly. Then I heard the

Hello! Today I’m introducing Kogarashi Waon’s new novel, Hello, My Ruthless Queen. It is a bestseller that has sold more than 100,000 copies in Japan, and the latest book by an author who has remained popular since debuting in 2018. Hato, the protagonist, is a high-school student living with a mother after losing a father. While working part-time at a flower shop with no dreams or hopes, Hato meets Sono Makina, a terminally ill patient. This meeting becomes the turning point that changes Hato’s

A book that points people weighed down by life toward the right path. The premise is somewhat fantastical: a rare disease makes plants grow in the body. Yet the love that blossoms through the protagonists’ connection is tender and intense. I was especially struck by Hato’s growth as the story unfolds. Near the end, their story brought tears to my eyes. When I was a student, whenever life felt hard, I wanted to give everything up and let go. This book felt like a reassuring pat on the shoulder,
