Ko Jong-hee: Everything was love

Jeon Roe-jin, who turns ninety this year, is a representative sculptor of Korea. Starting as an art teacher at Mapo Middle School in 1956, he served as a professor in the Department of Sculpture at Hongik University's College of Fine Arts from 1975, nurturing many students. He is a "passionate sculptor" who, to this day, never puts down his chisel and hammer for his work. Jeon Roe-jin always carries a palm-sized sheet of Kent paper in his pocket. From letter paper printed with the logo of the National Academy of Arts of Korea to small sketchbooks and the backs of advertisements, Jeon has cut and carried various types of paper from his youth until now at the age of ninety. Whenever he saw a beautiful landscape or a new idea struck him, he would always take the Kent paper out of his pocket to draw. Drawing is the most honest medium of expression that reveals Jeon Roe-jin's momentary thoughts, conceptualizations for his work, his perspective on the world, and his thoughts as an artist and as a human being. This book is a collection of drawings and interview essays created to commemorate the 90th birthday of sculptor Jeon Roe-jin. From approximately 500 drawings created from the 1970s to the present, 98 drawings have been selected to offer a glimpse into his life and artistic world. It also includes the voices of Jeon Roe-jin, his family who respect and love him, the author Ko Jong-hee, and his students.
