Description

What I emphasize whenever I write or teach is the study of history. I talk about two gifts it offers: the ability to handle situations and the ability to foresee the future. Given the nature of history and why we need to study it, we cannot help but point out how little today's social leaders study history. We live in an age when everyone records and remembers history. Moments are constantly recorded in writing, audio, and video; collective intelligence steadily preserves those records, then brings them back up whenever and wherever needed. In this age of collective historical records and memory, serious study of history is more necessary than ever. Accurate historical study is essential to distinguish true records and memories from false ones and to identify the countless fake news stories and false information immediately. History has always pursued justice. It shows people the right path to take. Yet many have not chosen that path; by siding with evil or compromising instead of pursuing justice, they have left many stains on history. Studying history points us toward the right path. These essays are written lightly, but their message is somber. I hope, with the help of my readers' clear eyes, that we can look forward together to the day when history, justice, and the people who are its true protagonists win completely. —From the revised and expanded edition preface

I have been studying history lately—Korean history, to be exact—and plan to take the 72nd Korean History Proficiency Test as well. When studying our country's history, there are many close connections with Chinese history that cannot be overlooked. So beyond the exam itself, I naturally became interested in China's historical course and its relationship with our own. That is how I came across the revised and expanded edition of The History Studies of Successful Leaders by Kim Young-soo. The

Most people have heard of Records of the Grand Historian, Sima Qian's history book. It is also the source of many four-character idioms we commonly use. The book I read this time explains, through questions, what kind of mindset one needs to succeed, drawing on what Records of the Grand Historian says. Its author, Professor Kim Young-soo, majored in ancient Korea-China relations and continued his studies in Chinese culture after completing his doctoral coursework in 1992, the year relations

Sima Qian devoted his whole heart to every one of the 526,500 characters in the 130 volumes of Records of the Grand Historian. Throughout the work, he asks us about “the human way” and “how to live as a human being.” Some passages seem to call to mind our own lives today. That is why the title of this book's supplementary section and introduction is “Sima Qian Asks Us About Ourselves.” (p. 7) Cui Zhu was a treacherous minister who seized power after a coup and murdered Duke Zhuang. His power,

This book is a revised and expanded edition of one published in 2020 under the title The Leader's Study of History. As the author explains in the preface, the special appendix at the very end, 'The Noble Person and Leadership,' brings together sayings and passages about the noble person from Eastern classics such as the Analects, the Book of Rites, and Records of the Grand Historian, connecting them with what leaders should be like today. The author, chair of the Korean Sima Qian Society, draws

Even without debating who first declared that nothing is new under the sun, since human life began, people have turned knowledge drawn from their lives into wisdom and learned how to preserve that wisdom for future generations. For this reason, we say we should learn from history, though I sometimes wonder how many people really do. Popular songs say the past has passed, but the past is bound up with the present and connected to the future. We divide time for convenience into past, present, and

The History Studies of Successful Leaders is a book by Kim Young-soo, who researches Sima Qian and Chinese history. It brings together pieces the author contributed to various media over the past decade about the spirit and ideas of Sima Qian and Records of the Grand Historian, revised to fit current circumstances. The book was first going to be called Sima Qian Columns, then became Sima Qian Asks Us About Ourselves, and finally The Leader's Study of History. This revised and expanded edition

This book discusses what we can learn from history and which techniques or strategic ways of thinking can be applied in real life. It should be appealing in particular because it focuses on Chinese history and historical figures. At first glance, it may seem to focus only on historical events, figures, and the value of history. But it also uses examples from the past and historical figures to explain business strategies and management techniques that can be applied today, making it a book with

This book, The Leader's Study of History, was reissued four years later as a revised and expanded edition because of readers' steady interest. It connects ideas about the noble person with modern leadership, so it should be easy to understand. It has filled gaps in the first edition and added discussions of the noble person and leadership, which makes me look forward to it even more. By learning history, we can see and learn many things through historical figures and events. We can develop the

I recently listened to the audiobook The Red Sleeve, a beautiful yet sad love story about King Jeongjo and his royal concubine, Uibin Seong. As the two-volume book was nearing its end, uncontrollable tears streamed from my eyes. My history grades in school were at the bottom. History class itself was really fun, though. Our big history teacher held nothing back while teaching. One day he would play a king shouting orders; another day he would imitate a queen. We laughed so hard when he mimicked

The author, Kim Young-soo, has studied Records of the Grand Historian and China for 30 years, and has reportedly visited China more than 150 times over 25 years. I'm reading a book by quite a remarkable person. I have read more than ten of his books over the years. (I was curious if that was really true, so I checked my Aladin purchase history, but unfortunately I couldn't find them by author.) It seems he has published nearly a hundred books. The Chapter 1 subheading, 'History Is Memory, Not
