Architectural design is a series of tasks that transforms a site into a physical form, beginning with reading the site and proceeding through the architect’s thinking, the client’s requirements, and the development of an architectural concept. The process can be divided into stages such as planning, schematic design, and design. The architect qualification examination assesses and verifies basic planning and design ability. Questions are set by broadly classifying the basic professional design skills an architect must possess in relation to sites and buildings, then dividing them into smaller task formats. Accordingly, this textbook is divided into three volumes by subject: Volume 1, Site Planning; Volume 2, Architectural Design 1; and Volume 3, Architectural Design 2. Each subject is arranged for self-study, with exam criteria, theory and planning, learning exercises, and practice problems organized by smaller task. Site Planning assesses site-related topics in detail, including site analysis, site zoning, terrain planning, site sections, site parking, and site layout. Architectural Design 1 covers the most important part of architectural design, evaluating the functional arrangement of individual rooms through floor-plan design. Architectural Design 2 assesses the technical aspects of a building in detail, including section design, stair design, roof design, structural planning, and building-services planning. Along with this structure, the book is written to make the theory and approaches to problems as easy to understand as possible. Its greatest strength and defining feature is that it includes a planning process that can be applied directly in practice.
