This book deals with the analysis and interpretation of drama, covering stage drama, film, and television drama. Specifically, it examines methods for systematically analyzing and interpreting stories that employ dramatic modes. Through this, it aims to serve as a guide for readers to discover the joy of interpretation. Composed of seven chapters, this book begins by explaining the basic principles and attitudes for interpreting drama based on hermeneutics. It then covers specific analytical methods, including the analysis of plot, characters, audiovisual elements, and montage. Numerous case studies are included to aid understanding when explaining these methods. This allows readers to learn analytical methods as a practical act rather than merely as conceptual thought. The final section examines the methods of evaluating a work—the final stage of analysis—by distinguishing between outsider and insider approaches. In doing so, the entire process from the beginning to the end of analysis has been systematized. This revised edition incorporates newly acquired analytical methods and new case studies. In this process, Bakhtin's concept of the "chronotope," which signifies artistic spatiotemporal dimensions, has been introduced into the analysis of drama. This concept, which is still unfamiliar in discussions of theater and film, is interestingly expected to advance the horizons of interpretation to a new dimension.
